Tennessee authorities announced that a military special forces veteran accused of shooting his wife has been found dead following a six-day manhunt.
The Stewart County Sheriff's Office said in a May 6 social media post that Craig Berry was found dead from what investigators indicated was "a self-inflicted gunshot wound." The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed the discovery in a statement to USA TODAY, saying that Berry "is deceased and no longer a threat to the public."
A May 1 post from the sheriff said that deputies responded to a "domestic altercation" that morning at about 1:30 a.m. The office alleged that Berry shot his wife during the altercation and fled into the woods.

Authorities said in a May 2 social media post that they had anticipated a "lengthy" search for Berry.
In the post, the sheriff's office described him as having "extensive training in survival tactics" and said that he could have had at least one handgun and extra ammunition. "He is an excellent swimmer and diver, and is in good physical shape," the post reads.
Officials did not state where Berry was found and how long investigators believed he had been dead before being discovered.
Berry had a warrant out against him for second-degree attempted murder in the alleged shooting of his wife, authorities said. His wife was taken to a medical facility, and her condition was not made public and remains unclear as of May 6.
