TAMPA, Fla. – A 17-year-old is behind bars this week after a brazen early-morning heist at a Tampa smoke shop left a business owner with shattered glass and thousands of dollars in missing inventory. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies tracked down the suspect just two days after he allegedly used a backpack to haul away a small fortune in merchandise.
The investigation began on April 17, 2026, when units were called to the Atomic Smoke Shop on West Hillsborough Avenue around 6:45 a.m.
Upon arrival, deputies found the storefront’s front window completely destroyed. Surveillance video from the scene captured a suspect smashing his way through the glass and entering the building.
According to investigators, the individual grabbed nearly $5,000 worth of items, stuffed them into a backpack, and climbed back out through the broken window.

Detectives spent the weekend following leads and successfully identified the person in the footage. On April 19, 2026, authorities arrested Cayden Goldberg, 17, in connection with the burglary.
Goldberg now faces a string of felony charges, including two counts of burglary of an unoccupied structure, criminal mischief involving $1,000 or more in damages, and third-degree grand theft. Because the suspect allegedly covered his face during the crime, the theft charge was enhanced to Grand Theft While Wearing a Mask.
“Our deputies acted swiftly to identify the suspect and hold him accountable,” Sheriff Chad Chronister stated following the arrest. “We remain committed to protecting our local businesses and ensuring those who break the law face consequences.”
The Sheriff’s Office noted that while an arrest has been made, the investigation remains active. Information regarding whether any of the $5,000 in stolen goods was recovered has not yet been released.
