The Brownie Bake has issued a nationwide recall of muffins mislabeled as blueberry despite containing walnuts, with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning on May 8 that the error could trigger “serious or life-threatening allergic reactions” in people with tree nut allergies.
Which Muffins Are Being Recalled
According to the FDA, the recall affects Nouria Banana Nut muffins that were incorrectly labeled as blueberry muffins, meaning the label doesn’t disclose that walnuts (a tree nut allergen) are in the product.
The affected items were sold in packets of nine, each bearing the lot code number 6082 and UPC: 811070033979. They were distributed on March 31, 2026, through a third-party distributor who may have delivered them to retail and food service locations across the country.
The issue was discovered after a customer flagged the labeling mix-up in April, prompting an internal investigation that traced the error back to a packaging error. No illnesses have been reported so far, but the company warns that the mistake could pose serious health risks to some consumers.
Why Undeclared Allergens Are Dangerous
The FDA classifies tree nuts os one of the nine “major food allergens” that must be clearly labeled on packaged foods. These account for the vast majority of serious food-related allergic reactions in the United States.
The FDA says that the signs of an allergic reaction could include:
- Skin reactions: hives, itching, or swelling
- Digestive issues: vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Respiratory problems: wheezing, shortness of breath
- Cardiovascular effects: dizziness or drop in blood pressure
In severe cases, people can develop anaphylaxis, a rapid-onset emergency that can cause airway swelling, shock, and even death if untreated.
Why Food Allergy Labeling Matters
Food allergies are a widespread public health concern. Food Allergy Research and Education says that around 33 million Americans live with at least one food allergy, including millions with tree nut sensitivities.
The National Library of Medicine reports that, each year, food allergies lead to significant medical emergencies: approximately 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations, and around 150 deaths.
What Consumers Should Do Next
The FDA and Brownie Baker advises that anyone with a tree nut allergy should not consume the recalled muffins.
Instead, consumers should return the product to the place of purchase for a refund or dispose of it safely.
Labeling Errors Can Carry Serious Risks
While no illnesses have been reported, the recall underscores how even a simple packaging error can create potentially life-threatening risks for people with food allergies.
