Former NFL defensive end Josh Mauro has died, his family and former teams announced.
He was 35.
Mauro’s father, Greg Mauro, announced on Tuesday that his son died last week. “With many tears and broken hearts, yet anchored in the unshakable certainty that our precious Josh Mauro is now healed and made new — living in the presence of the Lord,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
A cause of death was not announced.
Mauro started with the Arizona Cardinals in 2014 and played for the franchise until 2018. He went on to play for the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars between 2018 and 2020 before returning to the Cardinals for his final season in 2021.
He spent the majority of his career with the Cardinals, who were "heartbroken" after learning of Mauro's passing, extending their "deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss," the team wrote in a statement on Tuesday.
The Raiders, who Mauro played for in 2019, also shared their sympathies in a social media post. "The deepest condolences of the Raiders Family are with Josh's family and friends at this time," the team wrote.
Stanford University also paid tribute to Mauro. "A 2013 All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection, Mauro was an integral part of four bowl teams, helping lead Stanford to a pair of Rose Bowl Game appearances," the school said. "Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."
During Mauro's career, he played 80 games, starting in 40, and amassed five career sacks and two forced fumbles.
