The San Antonio Spurs suffered a somewhat surprising Game 1 loss in the second round against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night, but they proved their mettle with an impressive bounce-back in Game 2. With all of the pressure on their shoulders, the young Spurs dominated Game 2 133-95 to even the series at one apiece.

Victor Wembanayma was the storyline coming out of Game 1, both for good and bad reasons. On one hand, the former No. 1 overall pick set a new NBA playoff record with 12 blocks and paired that with 11 points and 15 rebounds to collect a triple-double. On the other hand, he shot just 5-for-17 from the field and 0-for-8 from the 3-point line while giving up a number of key offensive rebounds in the second half.

On Wednesday night in Game 2, Wembanyama responded like the MVP-caliber player that he is. He finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks in just 26 minutes in the win, becoming the youngest player in Spurs history to record those numbers in a playoff game according to StatMuse.

While the counting stats are nice even in limited minutes, Wembanyama’s efficiency in this game was the biggest difference between Games 1 and 2. The unanimous Defensive Player of the Year shot 7-for-15 from the floor and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. While there is still even more room for improvement from Game 2, Wembanyama is trending in the right direction heading back to Minnesota.

On the other side, the Wolves will still be feeling good about themselves after getting a split in San Antonio. Chris Finch’s club still has a number of injuries to worry about, and Ayo Dosunmu picked up a heel injury on top of his ongoing calf injury in this game, but the Wolves have shown time and time again that they aren’t going to go away.

Wembanyama dominated the Spurs’ first-round series against the Trail Blazers, even after suffering a concussion in Game 2 and missing Game 3. If he can find his range from the field again and get back to that level, it will be very tough for a shorthanded Minnesota team to pull off the upset.
