Woman has 'one ick' at Disney—and backlash is swift: 'You are the villain'

Visitor complaint about theme park experience draws strong reactions from others online.

A video criticizing character interactions at Disney parks has triggered protests online, with pundits pushing back against what they describe as unrealistic expectations of performers.

The TikTok video, posted by prettyhippie505, shows Disney characters walking past guests without stopping, alongside on-screen text claiming that, “all the characters in Disney ignore the kids like this and never have time to talk to the kids.”

In the caption, the creator added that while they “love Disney,” one complaint stood out: “The price of our tickets should include seeing the characters as we please in the park.”

The post provoked more than 1,200 often sharp responses from fellow TikTok users who argued that the criticism overlooked how the parks operate and the demands placed on performers.

“This video isn’t doing what you thought it was gonna be doing. You are the villain,” one contributor declared.

Others pointed out that Disney characters are employees working under strict schedules and guidelines.

“Fun fact. They aren’t actually princesses, they are employees that need breaks. If they stopped for the every kid, they would never leave,” another supporter raised.

‘We got in trouble’

The debate highlights a broader misunderstanding about how Disney character interactions are structured. According to Explore.com, Disney Cast Members undergo extensive training and must adhere to detailed rules designed to maintain the immersive experience for guests.

These include staying in character at all times and following strict behavioral guidelines while on duty.

Performers are also often on tight schedules, moving between designated meet-and-greet locations rather than freely interacting throughout the park. That structure can make spontaneous interactions difficult, especially in crowded environments.

Some commenters with firsthand experience weighed in to explain those constraints.

“I used to be a face character,” began one contributor, adding, “Once it’s time to go backstage we have to go there or else we got in trouble for being late [because] our attendants had other characters to attend to.

“Don’t chase characters, just wait or ask when they will be back.”

Guidelines around character interactions are also shaped by safety and operational concerns.

According to WDW Info, performers are trained to follow specific rules about guest engagement, including limits on physical interaction and maintaining awareness of their surroundings. These rules are in place to protect both guests and employees, as well as to ensure consistency across the park experience.

The expectation to remain in character can also limit how performers respond to guests. Interactions are typically confined to designated areas and performers may not be able to stop when moving between locations or ending a shift.

Playing a Role

That context has fueled further criticism of the original complaint, with some pundits arguing that guest behavior plays a role in these encounters.

“If they are actively moving away from you while you chase them, you are, in fact, the problem,” another TikTok critic remarked.

Despite the backlash, the video reflects a recurring tension between guest expectations and the realities of theme park operations. While Disney parks market a highly immersive experience, the logistics behind maintaining that environment often mean that not every interaction unfolds as visitors might.
