Costco updates $1.50 hot dog combo for the first time in 40 years

For the first time since its 1984 debut, Costco is modifying the composition of its iconic $1.50 hot dog combo.

Costco has introduced a small but seismic update to its legendary $1.50 hot dog combo, marking the first significant change to the meal's composition in more than 40 years.

Costco now allows customers to substitute a 16.9-ounce bottle of Kirkland Signature water for the traditional 20-ounce fountain soda. While the pairing has evolved, the price - which has remained a flat $1.50 since the 1980s - remains firmly intact.

For decades, the deal has been a fixed point in an era of rampant inflation, consisting of a quarter-pound, all-beef hot dog served with a soda and free refills.

The addition of a bottled water alternative represents a rare pivot for a company that has long treated the combo as both a "loss leader" and a brand promise to its members.

Costco executives have historically gone to great lengths to protect the $1.50 price tag.

In 2022, then-Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti told MarketWatch that the company intended to hold the price "forever." That same year, when asked by CNBC if a price hike was on the horizon, then-CEO Craig Jelinek offered a definitive one-word answer: "No."

The introduction of the water option follows a series of recent adjustments to Costco's food court operations. These changes include a high-profile transition to Coca-Cola products in 2025 and stricter enforcement of membership requirements for food court access at many U.S. locations.

The company has also experimented with menu rotations, introducing items like giant chocolate chip cookies and rotisserie chicken Caesar salads to modernize its selection.
