As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft, they have the business of also trying to possibly land a trade. However, a major distraction emerged. An assistant coach got arrested ahead of Thursday’s event, according to a post on X by Ari Meirov.

“#Chiefs DBs coach Dave Merritt, one of the best in the NFL, was arrested Wednesday night and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, per @KCStar. He’s due in court today. The team is aware and (has) no comment.”

Merritt ran into problems Thursday morning, according to kansascity.com.

“Shortly after 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office filed a complaint against David Lee Merritt Sr., 54, of Stillwell, accusing him of “unlawfully, knowingly, or recklessly” causing bodily harm to a daughter, which constitutes a domestic violence offense, according to court documents,” Robert A. Cronkleton wrote.

Merritt is scheduled to make his first appearance at 2 p.m. in Johnson County District Court, Cronkleton added.

For the last seven seasons, Merritt has been with the Chiefs as the defensive backs coach. His coaching career has spanned nearly three decades. He had an 11-year stint with the New York Giants as a secondary and safeties coach.

Chiefs among the teams expected to consider a draft-day trade

The Chiefs are currently trying to focus on the NFL Draft. They have picks Nos. 9 and 29. And they are rumored to be in talks with teams in an attempt to move up.

One of the latest rumors has them trading with the Cowboys. The interesting scenario has the Cowboys sending their picks at Nos. 12 and 20 to the Chiefs for their two picks.

It might be a tough move for the Chiefs to drop from No. 9 to No. 12. But this year’s draft has so much uncertainty. So it might make more sense this year than in other years.

The Chiefs have needs at edge rusher, wide receiver, and defensive tackle.
