THE RUNDOWN
- Anne Hathaway wore custom Michael Kors to her ninth Met Gala.
- She nailed the “Fashion Is Art” dress code with a hand-painted gown by artist Peter McGough.
- The custom creation was inspired by a John Keats poem.
On Friday, Anne Hathaway teased that The Devil Wears Prada 2’s press tour was behind her—but the Met Gala was up next. The star returned to the glitzy New York City fashion event tonight, dressed in a Michael Kors Collection gown to celebrate the museum’s “Costume Art” exhibit. She finished the look with Roger Vivier shoes.
The custom mikado ball gown was intricately hand-painted by American artist Peter McGough, who drew inspiration from the 1819 John Keats poem, “Ode on a Grecian Urn.”
“This dress, to me, is about the goddess of a Grecian urn, and what I love about the dress is that it turns the person into an object of art,” McGough told Vogue. “It’s moving art. Fashion and art, they go together for me: Fashion is wearable art.”
Her dress may have been Grecian, but her makeup, hair, and accessories screamed Princess of Genovia. Fittingly, the actress is preparing to film The Princess Diaries 3 later this year.
Hathaway attended the Met Gala last year as well, wearing a custom Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera look designed to honor Herrera’s friendship with the late André Leon Talley as the museum celebrated the opening of its “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibit.
“There are few figures who exemplify the constant pursuit of beauty and perfection better than André,” Gordon told Vogue at the time. “He was one of Carolina Herrera’s best friends, and it was an honor to have met him and spent time with him. I will think of him when we walk onto the steps at The Metropolitan Museum, where he was always perched, delighting in all the looks.”
Last month, Hathaway spoke to People about how much her husband, Adam Shulman, has supported her through her career. This has been a huge year for Hathaway, who has five different projects coming out: Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street, and Verity.
“This year in particular was unusual,” she said. “He and I both know that it’s probably never going to happen like this again. And the way he stepped up, I mean, in every possible way, he’s the most extraordinary person I’ve ever met. I’m so lucky that he’s my partner that I spend my life with. If I didn’t know that before this past year, I think I really know it now because with absolutely everything he’s just, he’s on it. He holds it down. I hope that doesn’t sound like I’m bragging, but he’s a dream partner to me.”
She added, “It’s one thing to have dreams. It’s another thing to have somebody who helps you achieve them. I absolutely would not be able to have achieved what I’ve done without my husband.”
