Apple usually releases its iPhones in a range of colorful options, but it sounds like the iPhone Fold (or iPhone Ultra) won't be going down that route. In fact, it may be stuck with the dullest possible phone colors you can imagine: dark blue or white. At least it's not black and white.
If you've been keeping up with iPhone 18 Pro colors, you'll know that Apple is expected to offer two brand new shades: a light blue and a dark purple that's being referred to as "Dark Cherry," alongside standard options of black and silver. The iPhone Fold will apparently not be following that example.
We first heard about this back in February, when leaker Instant Digital claimed that only two iPhone Fold color options would be available — a claim they reiterated earlier this month. At the time, they only mentioned white as one of the confirmed options, and sources speaking to MacWorld have also claimed that a "classic silver and white model" would be on the way.
Those same sources also mentioned an "Indigo" model, which has been described as similar to the Deep Blue iPhone 17 Pro. In other words, this means we may be seeing a darker, almost Navy Blue shade rather than the bolder and more striking colors we'd get from non-folding iPhones.
It's quite disappointing to hear this after all the colorful products Apple has released in recent years, including the vivid MacBook Neo options that went on sale earlier this year. But I can't say I'm surprised.
This isn't out of character for Apple
This wouldn't be the first time Apple has taken a boring approach with iPhone colors. All iPhones were the same color until the release of iPhone 4, which offered a choice between black and white. The interesting colors didn't arrive until the launch of iPhone 5s, which was the first iPhone to offer a gold option, and the colorful plastic shells of the iPhone 5c.
The iPhone X, easily the most important iPhone of the 2010s, was also only available in black and white. So it's not as though Apple doesn't have a history of toning things down when it feels the need.
Considering the iPhone Fold is expected to cost at least $2,000, it kind of makes sense for Apple to keep the options limited. This is a brand new kind of iPhone, with a prohibitively expensive price tag, and there's no telling what the demand will be like. By offering basic colors, Apple isn't likely to deal with over-the-top demand for a specific model and get stuck with a surplus of colors that people aren't interested in buying.
Then again, there has been some speculation that the limited color options are a result of production challenges. It's claimed that the iPhone fold will only be available in limited quantities due to the struggle ramping up mass production, and that means Apple wouldn't want to overcomplicate things by trying to offer a wider range of colors.
We'll just have to wait and see how this all pans out later this year, following the iPhone Fold's launch. That's expected to happen alongside iPhone 18 Pro, during Apple's traditional September iPhone event.
