It's the biggest change in more than a decade.
Over the past year, we've seen many brands vow to look at their ingredient lists and remove certain artificial ingredients, especially FD&C color additives. The change came swiftly after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration revoked its authorization for FD&C Red Dye 3 in early 2025 and announced an initiative to remove all FD&C colors from American foods by the end of 2027.
A few brands, including PepsiCo and Sam's Club, have completed their goals in eliminating artificial colors and flavors, while others, like Kraft Heinz and Nestle, are still hard at work.
Sam's Club and Walmart made quick work to reformulate their products, with Target on their heels. However, throughout this process, one store hasn't had to reevaluate its products: Aldi.
Aldi was one of the first national grocery chains to remove all certified synthetic colors from its private label products in 2015.
However, even after banning 13 ingredients from its products more than a decade ago, Aldi is taking its commitment to its customers a step further by announcing plans to remove 44 additional ingredients by the end of 2027.
Aldi Bans an Additional 44 Ingredients From Its Products
A few months ago, Aldi rebranded its private label products to introduce its first-ever namesake private label, while also adding "an Aldi original" badge to all other Aldi products, like Kirkwood-, Happy Farms-, and Sundae Shoppe-branded items. So, as its private label continues to grow, the chain is building on its customer commitment to quality by expanding its ingredient standards.
Previously, Aldi eliminated brominated vegetable oil, FD&C Blue No. 1 (Brilliant Blue FCF), FD&C Blue No. 2 (Indigotine), FD&C Green No. 3 (Fast Green FCF), FD&C Red No. 2 (Amaranth, Citrus Red), FD&C Red No. 3 (Erythrosine), FD&C Red No. 40 (Allura Red AC), FD&C Yellow No. 5 (Tartrazine), FD&C Yellow No. 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF), monosodium glutamate, Orange B, partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), and synthetic trans fatty acid.
Now, by the end of 2027, no Aldi exclusive food, vitamin, or supplement will contain these 44 ingredients:
| Acesulfame K | Olestra |
| Advantame | Phthalates |
| Anisole | Potassium aluminum sulfate |
| Aluminum sodium sulfate / Sodium aluminum sulfate | Potassium benzoate |
| Azodicarbonamide (ADA) | Potassium bisulfite/bisulfate |
| BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) | Potassium Bromate |
| BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) | Potassium metabisulphite |
| Bromated Flour | Potassium nitrate |
| Butylparaben | Potassium nitrite |
| Calcium Bromate | Propylene Oxide |
| Calcium propionate | Propylparaben |
| Calcium sorbate | Simplesse (brand name) |
| Canthaxanthin | Sodium aluminium phosphate acidic / Aluminum sodium phosphate |
| Cyclamates | Sodium ferrocyanide (Yellow Prussiate of Soda) |
| Diacetyl (Synthetic) | Sodium hydroxide |
| Dioctyl Sodium Sulfocsuccinate (DSS) | Sodium propionate |
| Ficin | Sodium stearyl fumarate |
| Lactylated esters of mono and diglycerides | Stearyl tartrate |
| Lye | Sucroglycerides |
| Methylparaben | Talc |
| Morpholine | Titanium Dioxide |
| Neotame | Toluene |
All new products will meet these guidelines. Plus, Aldi is reformulating any of its current private label products, which make up more than 90 percent of the store, that contain these ingredients to meet the new standards. The newly reformulated products will roll out throughout 2027.
Aldi says it is working with its suppliers to ensure that removing these 44 ingredients won't affect taste or cost for consumers. You'll know when your favorite Aldi products have been updated by looking at the ingredient information on the package.
So, here's hoping Aldi has been in the R&D kitchen working on a new recipe for my favorite Pueblo Lindo Taquitos, and that's why I haven't seen them on shelves since 2024. I'd love another Sam's Club Member’s Mark Chocolate Peppermint Almonds-sized miracle!
