Man jailed for killing 66-year-old in 'unprovoked' attack

A man has been jailed after admitting a "grievous and unprovoked" fatal attack on a 66-year-old.

Cameron Grocutt, 24, punched Mohamed Mahmoud Snnai - a complete stranger - on the back of the head, causing him to fall backwards, in October in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

Witnesses described hearing a "sickening thump" when Snnai hit his head on the pavement.

He was taken to hospital and his life support was later withdrawn. He died on 12 November.

'Extremely seriously'

"Grocutt carried out a grievous and unprovoked assault on an elderly man who was not known to him," said Sussex Police Det Insp James Meanwell.

"This was an isolated incident that did not pose a wider threat to the community," Meanwell added.

He thanked witnesses and local people for coming forward to report information that ensured Grocutt was "brought to justice".

Meanwell added that officers took the investigation "extremely seriously" and were "determined to find answers for the victim's family".

Grocutt, of no fixed address, initially admitted causing grievous bodily harm without intent and was charged with manslaughter over Snnai's death.

He pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Lewes Crown Court in February.

Grocutt was jailed for four years and four months.
