Passenger dies after going over balcony on cruise ship

A woman traveling on Carnival Firenze died after going over her cabin balcony, officials said.

A Carnival Cruise Line guest died after apparently going over the edge of her balcony, the company said.

The woman landed on a deck below her cabin aboard Carnival Firenze early on April 27. Her family, who was traveling with her, notified the crew about the incident.

“As is customary following these kinds of incidents, law enforcement was on board while the ship was in Catalina Island on Monday to collect information,” Carnival told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “The family is now off the ship and has returned home. Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one.”

The ship departed from Los Angeles for a four-day Baja Mexico cruise on April 26, according to CruiseMapper. Along with Catalina Island, the scheduled stops also included Ensenada, Mexico.

The cruise line did not identify the guest or share further information. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the “Search and Rescue team from the Avalon Sheriff’s Station assisted in recovering the decedent,” and directed further inquiries to the federal authorities.

The FBI did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The incident is not the only one of its kind in recent years. A Virgin Voyages passenger died after going over their balcony onto a lower deck in 2023.
