The San Diego Padres have been getting incredible production from their closer, Mason Miller, this season. Miller had thrown more than 34 consecutive scoreless innings, going back to the 2025 season. That streak was snapped on Monday, in the Padres’ 9-7 win over the Chicago Cubs.
A controversial call brought an end to Miller’s streak. Cubs batter Matt Shaw hit a ground ball off of Miller that appeared to roll into foul territory.
“Home-plate umpire Dan Merzel and third-base umpire Shane Livensparger, however, didn’t see it that way and said the ball was still in fair territory when it was picked up and that the play was non-reviewable,” ESPN reported.
Miller reacted to that call after the game. Shaw was able to reach base safely, which came back to bite Miller later.
“The call is what it is,” Miller told reporters. “I thought I saw something different, but he was a lot closer than I was. And I think everybody in the stadium had an opinion, but ultimately it’s only his that matters, so that’s the cards we were dealt.”
The Padres closer then gave up hits following Shaw’s plate appearance. Shaw would eventually score on a groundout to end Miller’s streak.
“The beauty of it is you get to start another one,” Miller said of the streak. “Kind of reflecting — I guess now is a little too soon — but probably tonight and tomorrow, reflect on it and come in tomorrow ready to start a new one.”
Miller has been named a possible Cy Young candidate this season, for his dominance on the mound. The Padres closer holds a 1.26 ERA with 10 saves.
San Diego and Chicago play again on Tuesday night. Following their win on Monday, San Diego is now 19-9 on the campaign.
