The best Met Gala looks of all time

From Diana Ross’s opulent ’80s glamour to Beyoncé’s sheer, sultry moment, and Tyla’s sculpted sand dress, these are our favorite Met Gala looks of all time.

The Met Gala has always been more than a red carpet moment. Rather, it’s a living archive of fashion at its most daring—where style meets cultural commentary on a global stage, merging art and fashion. Across decades, the most memorable looks have done more than capture attention; they’ve defined eras, shifted conversations, and expanded the boundaries of what fashion can represent.

From Diana Ross’s ruffled entrance in 1981, to Naomi Campbell and Lil’ Kim’s iconic Versace moments in the ’90s, the gala has long been a space where Black style, in particular, has shaped the visual language of luxury and making space for more black talent to shine through.

By the 2000s, figures like Iman brought a refined minimalism in Calvin Klein, proving that impact doesn’t always require excess. Then came a new wave of spectacle: Beyoncé in Givenchy and Rihanna in Guo Pei in 2015, both delivering instantly canonized moments that blurred the line between fashion and performance. The 2018 carpet pushed even further, with Solange in Iris van Herpen, Zendaya in Versace, and Virgil Abloh redefining tailoring through Off-White—each look challenging tradition in its own way.

In recent years, the legacy has only expanded. Think: Zoë Kravitz’s sleek Saint Laurent in 2021, and Tyla’s sculptural Balmain in 2024. Then, of course, last year, shedding light on Black dandyism through last year’s theme Super Fine: Tailoring Black were standout appearances from Jodie Turner-Smith, Colman Domingo, Kaytranada, and Tyler Mitchell.
