Trump replaces controversial surgeon general nominee Casey Means with Fox News contributor and radiologist

Trump blamed Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., for blocking Means’ confirmation.

Topline

President Donald Trump revoked Dr. Casey Means as his pick for surgeon general and replaced her with Fox News contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier on Thursday as Means’ nomination has been stalled in the Senate amid some Republican pushback.

Key Facts

Trump blamed Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., for blocking Means’ nomination in a Truth Social post announcing the switch, after Cassidy pressed her on her views about vaccines during a Senate hearing in February.

In addition to Cassidy, at least two other Republicans on the health committee, Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said they had reservations about Means, complicating her path to confirmation as the committee requires unanimous approval from its GOP members to advance her, assuming all Democrats object.
