Princess Eugenie is expecting her third child with her husband, Jack Brooksbank – but the new royal baby won't have any titles.
The royal, 36, who is the younger daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, is already mother to August, five, and Ernest, two.
Her older sister, Princess Beatrice, has two daughters, Sienna, four, and Athena, one, with her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. She is also stepmother to Wolfie, from Edoardo's previous relationship with architect Dara Huang.
Both Beatrice and Eugenie were born princesses from birth, though their father, Andrew, was stripped of his "Prince" title last October over his links to the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Royal rules around "Prince" and "Princess" titles
Neither Beatrice nor Eugenie's children have British royal titles as they are not direct grandchildren of the reigning monarch, King Charles.
Royal rules dictate that only the children and grandchildren of the monarch through the male line can be granted the title of "Prince" or "Princess".
The King's five grandchildren, George, Charlotte, Louis, Archie and Lilibet, all hold Prince and Princess titles.
Eugenie and Beatrice have the titles as they were born through the male line when their grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, was on the throne. Duchess Sophie and Prince Edward chose not to give their children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Essex, the titles, in a bid for them to pursue a more "normal" life.
Why do Beatrice's children have titles, but Eugenie's do not?
However, Beatrice's daughters may be entitled to their own titles, though it's unrelated to the royal family in the UK. Beatrice's husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, has Italian heritage and is a Count, making the Princess a Countess, or 'Countessa' as well as 'Nobile Donna'.
Property developer Edoardo's family were part of the Italian nobility before the country became a republic back in 1946.
The use of titles of nobility is not currently recognised by the Italian state but they can still be used out of courtesy. The revelation was made by Princess Beatrice's father-in-law, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi.
Wolfie is therefore entitled to be known as "Count", while Sienna and Athena can be called "Nobile Donna" and "countesses".
Jack was not given a royal title after his marriage to the princess, and so their children took rank from their father. Therefore, August and Ernest are both known as Master Brooksbank.
Historic titles
Ahead of Beatrice and Edo's wedding in 2020, Alessandro told the Mail On Sunday: "Edoardo is the only male descendant taking the family into the next generation, he is a count—his wife will be a countess automatically and any of their children will be counts or nobile donna.
"We as a family celebrated 1,000 years in 1985 with unbroken documented archives. We are one of the only families in Italy to have all the records from that period to today."
