BMW Group is partnering with the Centre of Excellence for Robotic Technology (CRTA) at the University of Zagreb in Croatia to apply artificial intelligence to battery cell production. The joint initiative, called "Insight," targets AI-driven optimization across the full battery cell value chain, covering electrode production, final line testing, and direct recycling.
Development of next-generation battery cells at BMW's Battery Cell Competence Centre in Munich requires extensive testing that consumes significant time and resources. The Insight project's predictive AI models aim to cut material input and processing time by more than 50% by forecasting process parameters and performance data. The technology also targets the final cell approval process, with the potential to eliminate the standard "quarantine" phase, during which cells are held under controlled temperature conditions before housing.
BMW has built out a network of battery competence centers across Germany to consolidate its cell expertise. The Munich facility leads research and development. The Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre in Parsdorf handles near-mass-production testing of concepts developed in Munich, while the Cell Recycling Competence Centre in Salching focuses on direct recycling.
