The Kansas City Chiefs may have been one of the big winners over the past four days, beginning with the NFL Draft in Pittsburgh, and wrapping up with their post-draft signings.
The first round brought them LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane at No. 6, followed by Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods at No. 29 overall. They followed that up with R Mason Thomas, an edge from Oklahoma in the second round, and Oregon corner Jadon Canady in the fourth.
Kansas City then began adding young players to the offense, including Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson and Cincinnati wide receiver Cyrus Allen. They closed out their 2026 NFL Draft with LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, just in case.
Like other teams, the Chiefs continued making roster moves after the draft. They most recently added the son of Dallas Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith as another potential weapon for the backfield.

According to an Instagram post, Texas A&M running back E.J. Smith signed as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs. He brings six years of college football experience, having first joined Stanford in 2020 and played there until 2023, before transferring to Texas A&M in 2024.
His four years at Stanford resulted in 109 carries for 557 yards and five touchdowns. In his more recent two seasons with A&M, he finished with 98 carries for 412 yards and four touchdowns.
Smith did some receiving work, too, compiling over 470 yards with a touchdown on 71 receptions during his college career.
Ahead of the NFL Draft, the Chiefs made another big move when they acquired Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III for their offense, potentially taking a lot of pressure off Patrick Mahomes. As ESPN reported, Walker signed a three-year, $43.05 million contract with $28.7 million fully guaranteed.
They’ve now added several potential backup options for their depth chart, with Emmett Johnson and E.J. Smith. Ahead of signing with the Chiefs as a UDFA, Smith worked out earlier this month for his famous father’s former team, the Dallas Cowboys.
Emmitt Smith famously won three Super Bowls as a member of the roster, which also included quarterback Troy Aikman and wide receiver Michael Irvin. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer was intrigued to see Smith’s son at the workout for local college players.
“You know me, man, I’m family. I’m all family. And you watch his film, and he was an incredible short-yardage runner, powerful. But, yeah, just watching him move, seeing him in person, the type of young man he is, it’s cool,” Schottenheimer said at the time.
