The NFL Draft is a season of smoke screens, but Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay might have just pulled off the ultimate “gotcha” moment at the expense of Kay Adams.
Back in late March, Adams interviewed McVay on her Up & Adams show and pressed him for his thoughts on Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson. At the time, McVay was the king of nonchalance. He tossed out some polite praise, admitted he “liked” the kid, but then claimed he probably hadn’t done as much work on Simpson as Adams had. He even threw a few other names into the mix to keep everyone guessing about the team’s plans for the No. 13 overall pick.
Well, the secret is out now. On Thursday night, the Los Angeles Rams officially made Ty Simpson the successor to Matthew Stafford by snagging him with that very 13th selection in what many analysts called a draft-day stunner. Adams wasted no time reacting to the news on X, jokingly posting, “Sounds like he lied to me lol.”
It is hard to blame McVay for the tactical deception given Simpson’s high-ceiling potential. During his 2025 campaign at Alabama, the 6-foot-1 passer torched defenses for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and a measly five interceptions.
His completion percentage sat at a steady 64.5% across 15 starts. While he struggled in a 38-3 Rose Bowl loss to the Indiana Hoosiers while battling a rib injury, throwing for only 67 yards, his legend grew during the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. In that game, he led the Crimson Tide back from a 17-point deficit to stun the Oklahoma Sooners.
The Rams are betting that Simpson’s processing speed and big-game grit will translate to the next level. For McVay, it was just another day of navigating the draft’s murky waters. For Adams, it was a hilarious reminder that you can never truly trust a head coach with a microphone in March.1
