Costco is shaking up its iconic hot dog combo for the first time in 40 years

Don't worry—your wallet is safe.

Don't worry—your wallet is safe.

A trip to Costco isn’t just about stocking up on bulk cereal, toilet paper, sodas, laundry detergent, or produce, or filling your cart with the latest fashion deals, bakery items, or meals for the coming week. Members in the know wouldn’t dare skip a chance to hit the warehouse’s food court for oversized pizza slices, Chicken Bakes, or a $1.50 hot dog combo. It’s a shopping tradition that hasn’t changed in 40 years. Now, there’s a change to the popular combo. Don't worry—the low price is holding steady. Customers now have the option to get it with water instead of soda.

The new combo option comes with a 16.9-ounce bottle of Kirkland Signature water for those who want to skip the soda. It’s a small change, and one that likely has customers sighing in relief that the price didn’t increase or the combo went away altogether. Now members who want a healthier option don’t have to make special requests for a cup of water, which sometimes isn’t as good out of the drink dispenser, and it's easy to take a water bottle along for more shopping or the drive home.

It could just be the price that makes Costco hot dogs so craveable—it has stayed the same since 1985. But the popularity of this food court item is likely the combination of a juicy quarter-pound all-beef hot dog served on a soft, fluffy bun, with ketchup, mustard, relish, and onions to top things off. Diners love it because it’s the right hot dog-to-bun ratio, and that’s important if you’ve ever had a hot dog with too much bun. Plus, the traditional combo comes with a 20-ounce refillable soda on the side.

When Costco announces changes to customers’ favorites, there’s reason to worry. Why change a good thing? And Costco has a lot of them. But the chain’s recent new packaging for rotisserie chickens and faster checkout options are made with customers in mind. Other new finds fans can get excited about are a new blueberry sourdough bread in the bakery, sourdough bread bowls, and Caramel Churro Sundae that may require another Costco run in the near future.
