Did Elizabeth Warren sell Spirit Airlines stock before budget carrier went out of business? Here's the truth

Warren previously opposed a proposed merger between Spirit Airlines and JetBlue in 2024.

Claim:

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren sold 20,000 shares in Spirit Airlines two weeks before the company went out of business in May 2026.

Labeled Satire (About this rating?)

In May 2026, a rumor circulated online claiming that Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren sold 20,000 shares in Spirit Airlines two weeks before the carrier went out of business.

For example, a Facebook user claimed on May 3, 2026, (archived):

Senator Elizabeth Warren, the architect of the Spirit Airlines dissolution, sold 20,000 shares of the airline at a huge profit just two weeks ago. She bought the shares after she killed the merger deal with JetBlue two years ago for pennies on the dollar and watched them grow to be worth millions. Two weeks later, the airline went under and ceased operations. It's almost like she knew...

The claim spread as Spirit Airlines announced on May 2, 2026, that it would close down, citing rising oil prices and other business pressures.

Some users seemed to interpret the rumor of Warren selling her Spirit Airlines shares as fact, with critics leveling insider trading allegations — suggesting she would have known whether the government would bail out the low-cost carrier (archived, archived, archived, archived). Snopes readers contacted us to ask whether the claim was true.

To investigate the rumor's legitimacy, we first used search engines such as DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo (archived, archived, archived). If Warren had really sold Spirit Airlines shares weeks before the company ceased trading, journalists with reputable news outlets, such as The Associated Press or Reuters, would have widely reported on it, and those search inquiries would have uncovered such evidence. That was not the case.

The rumor originated with America's Last Line of Defense, whose logo appeared in the bottom-right corner of most posts that included an image. America Loves Liberty, a page associated with the network, first shared the story on May 3, 2026, as seen above. America Loves Liberty's Facebook bio reads "AI-free trollery and right-wing propaganda courtesy of America's Last Line of Defense. Nothing on this page is real." (America Loves Liberty is part of a network of pages run by the same person who runs America's Last Line of Defense.)

However, the "America's Last Line of Defense" watermark, which also contained the word "Satire," was not visible in every post sharing the story, meaning that some users saw the claim outside of its original, satirical context.

The image America Loves Liberty used authentically showed Warren during a press appearance on Jan. 12, 2026, according to the reputable photo repository Getty Images.

We reached out to America's Last Line of Defense for its response to the fact that some people mistook the satirical story for real news. A spokesperson for the page said it would not cooperate with Snopes.

A spokesperson for Warren's office told Snopes via email that claims the senator sold Spirit Airlines shares before the company ceased trading were false. The spokesperson referred us to Warren's public financial disclosures, though she had not published a filing for the period in question due to the claim's recency.

Warren faced criticism online after Spirit Airlines ceased operations because she opposed (archived) a suggested merger between the carrier and JetBlue in 2024. In response, she posted on X (archived) on May 4 that the "JetBlue merger failed because a judge, appointed by Ronald Reagan, said the deal was illegal."

Snopes has debunked many pieces of satire from America's Last Line of Defense, including that NBC host Rachel Maddow was suspended without pay over comments about an attempt to kill U.S. President Donald Trump and that MGM Grand canceled Jimmy Kimmel's nonexistent summer residency after Trump called for a boycott of the comedian.

Since the effectiveness of satire is subjective, we use "originated as satire" or "labeled satire" ratings based on creators' descriptions of their work. It's your call on whether you agree.
