Former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin defeated 14-term incumbent Rep. John Larson at the Connecticut Democratic Convention on Tuesday night, earning the state party's endorsement for the 1st Congressional District ahead of the August 11 primary.

Bronin received the backing of 214 delegates to Larson's 204, according to local media reports. A third candidate, Jillian Gilchrest, also earned a spot on the ballot -- a development which could help Larson by splitting the anti-incumbent vote

The matchup between Larson, 77, and Bronin, 46, is seen as one of a slew of primaries fueled by a desire for generational change within the Democratic Party.

"Tonight, Connecticut Democrats made history and chose a path of new energy and new leadership," Bronin said in a statement. "I respect John Larson deeply, but I hope he listens to the message that was sent tonight by the most active, loyal Democrats in our party – that it’s time to pass the torch."
