Girl, 6, bonds with one-eyed dog at adoption event, parents know what to do

Natalie told Newsweek that it was like her daughter Sage and rescue dog Piper "already knew each other" when they met at the event.

A girl who attended an animal adoption event with her parents instantly fell in love with a one-eyed rescue pup, and it was clear that her wish to adopt a dog was finally about to happen.

Having always wanted to rescue a pet, Natalie, 38, decided to attend the Niagara SPCA adoption event on May 3. She also took her 6-year-old daughter, Sage, along with her, who was so excited to meet as many dogs as possible. But as it turned out, it did not take Sage long to find her match, as she bonded with a dog named Piper immediately.

Indeed, Piper seemed besotted by Sage in that very moment too. Natalie, who resides in Ontario, Canada, told Newsweek that the 6-month-old dog ran over to Sage straight away, as if “they already knew each other.” The duo stayed together throughout the event and Natalie (who does not wish to disclose her full name) was left with a major decision.

“Sage didn’t want to leave her side, and I could instantly tell there was already such a special bond forming between them,” Natalie said. “Sage became emotional thinking someone else might adopt her and kept asking if we could bring her home right away.

She continued: “Sage and I had already decided we wanted to adopt Piper, but of course my husband had to meet her too. When we brought him to the shelter a few days later, he completely fell in love with her too.”

After agreeing with her husband, Natalie looked at Sage and said, “I guess we’re adopting a dog.” Sage was so overjoyed and started screaming with excitement. Not only was the family finally getting a dog, but they were rescuing a pup who had a tough start in life.

Natalie shared a video on TikTok (@nattybodhi) showing the moment Sage and Piper met at the event and bonded straight away. The video continues to show the duo playing outside and Piper coming home with her new family. The adorable story has melted hearts online, generating over 417,200 views and 71,200 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.

Piper was surrendered to the shelter by her previous owners with an untreated eye infection that was so severe, veterinarians had no choice but to remove the eye. Despite a difficult beginning, Piper is already thriving in her forever home and has adjusted incredibly well.

Natalie said: “Piper is doing so well. She sleeps through the night (either in our bed or curled up in her own dog bed). She’s energetic, playful, confident, hilarious, and just wants to cuddle and be close to us. She loves walks, although some outdoor noises still make her a little nervous, but she’s getting more comfortable every day.”

The family is gradually introducing Piper to their two cats, Misha and Roo, and their bunny named Snowy.

Adopting Piper has been such a rewarding experience for Natalie and her family. They always wanted to rescue a dog, but Natalie tells Newsweek that seeing the bond between Piper and Sage has shown her “how beautiful adoption truly is.”

She continued: “Sometimes I catch myself looking at where Piper’s eye is missing and I get emotional thinking about what she may have gone through. There are moments where she just quietly looks at me, and it feels like she knows she’s finally in a good place. If anyone is unsure about adoption, visit shelters, attend events, and talk to the staff. Once you spend time with the animals and hear their stories, it changes everything.”
