It’s been a wild ride for Ty Simpson. A former 5-star QB, Simpson sat behind #1 overall pick Bryce Young before losing in a QB battle to Jalen Milroe, winding up on the sidelines for four years. Most QBs in today’s era would have transferred, but Simpson stayed at Alabama, and when he finally got his chance, he put together a season worthy of a 1st round draft selection.
It was a weird season, with Simpson looking like a future #1 overall pick for the first half of the year before seeing h is production decline significantly in the second half. A litany of injuries (including losing a bunch of weight from gastritis) came out later, and there’s also the fact that Alabama had one of the nation’s worst rushing attacks and had one of the highest drop rates in the country. Essentially, Simpson was limping to finish line and dragging an offense that couldn’t get out of it’s own way.
Clearly, the Rams looked at these circumstances and decided that what they saw from the QB during that stretch in October was convincing enough to invest in him.
Simpson walks into possibly the best situation in the NFL, as he’ll be backing up the aging Matt Stafford in arguably the top offense in the league with an awesome receiver group, offensive line, and the top offensive play caller in football. He’ll get to sit for a year or so before stepping in when Stafford hangs it up.
For Alabama, this is now the Tide’s 6th starting QB in a row to wind up drafted, four of which have all been 1st round picks. What a great time to be a Bama fan. Roll Tide, Ty, and best of luck at the next level!
