President Donald Trump’s approval rating among Republicans has dipped below 80 percent for the first time, according to new figures released Wednesday in The Marquette Law Poll.
Previous surveys have also shown that the president’s job approval ratings have fallen, including those on the economy, potentially hurting the Republican Party’s chances of keeping both congressional chambers in the upcoming midterms this year.
Newsweek reached out to the White House via email on Wednesday for comment.
Why It Matters
Lessened Republican approval of Trump from earlier peaks could become a trend affecting intraparty leverage, policy debates and turnout dynamics ahead of the crucial midterms.
Several recent surveys have also shown record or near‑record lows for Trump among key blocs, including Gen Z and independent voters, potentially compounding headwinds for the White House and GOP amid public concern over the cost of living and the war with Iran.
What To Know
According to the Marquette poll, Trump’s overall approval rating is 39 percent versus a 60 percent disapproval rating. “The approval rating is a new low for the second term, down from 42% approval in January 2026; it was 48% in February 2025, at the start of his second term,” the poll notes in part.
Among Republicans, Trump’s approval rating has dipped to 78 percent, a drop of 11 percent from the beginning of his second term and the first time it has dipped below 80 percent, the pollster notes.
The poll surveyed 982 adults across the country from April 8 to April 16, with a 3.4 percent margin of error.
The only issue the president has a positive net approval rating on is border security, with 52 percent approval versus 47 percent disapproval. His approval ratings on immigration, the economy, war in Iran and cost of living are all underwater with the pollster.
In an email on Tuesday regarding another poll showing Trump hitting a record-low approval rating, White House spokesman Davis Ingle said to Newsweek, “The ultimate poll was November 5th 2024 when nearly 80 million Americans overwhelmingly elected President Trump to deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda. No other President in history has accomplished more for the American people than President Trump, who is working tirelessly to create jobs, cool inflation, increase housing affordability, and more. The President has already made historic progress not only in America but around the world, and this is just the beginning as his agenda continues taking effect.”
