Newsom issues dire warning about Trump’s latest rallying cry: ‘How democracy ends’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday said the MAGA leader is “OPENLY calling to suspend elections.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday issued a dire warning about President Donald Trump and his continued panic about the upcoming midterm elections, pointing to his social media post on Sunday to warn that the MAGA leader is aiming to help “rig” the proceedings.

“Donald Trump is OPENLY calling to suspend elections so MAGA can rig them,” Newsom wrote Monday on X. “That’s how democracy ends.”

Politics: Critics Think This Is The ‘Most Desperate ****’ The Trump White House Has Ever Posted

Trump on Sunday published a proverbial rallying cry on his Truth Social platform after the U.S. Supreme Court last week struck a blow to the Voting Rights Act, urging Republicans to continue their efforts in redrawing congressional districts to their advantage.

“We cannot allow there to be an Election that is conducted unconstitutionally simply for the ‘convenience’ of State Legislatures,” wrote Trump. “If they have to vote twice, so be it. We should demand that State Legislatures do what the Supreme Court says must be done.”

He continued, “That is more important than administrative convenience. The byproduct is that the Republicans will receive more than 20 House Seats in the upcoming Midterms!”

Trump and the GOP launched an unprecedented effort last year to redraw congressional districts mid-decade to tilt votes in their favor. The effort has largely backfired, as Democrats followed suit and successfully redrew those lines in California and Virginia.

Conservative pundits have been warning Republican lawmakers for months that the midterm elections in November could be disastrous for the GOP. Groups allied with the president have spent millions of dollars on races in states including Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.

The incumbent party historically loses congressional seats in midterms, and House Republicans are already dealing with a thin majority of 217 seats to the Democrats’ 212. Five seats remain vacant after three members of Congress resigned, and two died in office.

The results of a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos survey published Sunday showed Trump’s disapproval rating has plummeted to 62%, the worst of both his terms. His approval among Republican-leaning independents, meanwhile, has reached an all-time low of 56%.

The survey also showed 49% prefer Democrats in House elections, giving them a five-point advantage over Republicans, who are sitting at 44%. The poll, conducted between April 24 and April 28, showed Trump’s general approval rating currently sitting at 37%.

Newsom has long been rumored to run for president in 2028, but has yet to launch his campaign formally. On Friday, he decried Trump’s apparent corruption and lucrative foreign entanglements during an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

Newsom said during the show, “We can’t allow any of this to be normalized.”
