Mass shooting at Maryland illegal car rally leaves one dead, six injured

Police have not yet detailed what may have sparked the gunfire.

One person was killed and six others were injured early Monday after gunfire erupted at an “illegal car rally” inside a Columbia, Maryland, parking garage, according to Howard County police.

Meanwhile, no suspect information has been released, and police have not detailed what may have sparked the shooting. Investigators are still working to determine how many shooters were involved and whether the violence stemmed from disputes within the group.

The Context

The event was an unsanctioned car rally, a type of pop‑up gathering that can draw large crowds before law enforcement is aware. Detectives believe many participants knew one another and traveled from outside Howard County, complicating early investigative efforts.

The shooting adds to a year already marked by persistent mass‑shooting violence across the country. As of March 31, the country had recorded 98 mass shootings, leaving 115 people dead and 377 wounded, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA).

Although overall shooting deaths have declined compared with recent years, mass‑shooting incidents continue to occur in every region of the country, underscoring how routine multi‑victim gunfire has become in public and semi‑public spaces.

What To Know

Police found the first victim at 5:27 a.m. inside a parking garage on the 6700 block of Alexander Bell Drive, where officers discovered an adult male dead from gunshot wounds. An adult female was also located at the scene and taken to a hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries.

Four additional victims surfaced over the next several hours, arriving separately at area hospitals with gunshot wounds believed to be connected to the same rally. Police said in a press release all four had injuries that did not appear life‑threatening.

A sixth surviving victim later walked into a Virginia hospital, according to an early‑afternoon update from Howard County police. That person also had a non‑life‑threatening gunshot wound, bringing the total number of injured to six.

What Happens Next

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Howard County detectives are continuing to piece together what led to the shooting and are reviewing surveillance footage from the garage and surrounding businesses.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact investigators at 410‑313‑STOP or submit tips to HCPDcrimetips. Authorities say additional updates will be released as the investigation develops.
