A suspect shot by Goldsboro officers on Wednesday in a break-in, shooting and standoff situation has died from his injuries, according to police.

The suspect, Alexander Jones, 62, who was treated at the scene and transported to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill died Thursday, according to police.

Jones is accused of breaking into a home around on Shelley Drive around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday and shooting Yolanda Farmer, 56, of Goldsboro, who was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say Jones barricaded himself inside the home and then set a bedroom on fire after chasing the victim. Jones was shot after he began firing his weapon at the victim and police officers, officials said.

Goldsboro police said the two involved were "acquaintances."

Goldsboro police, with the assistance of other law enforcement teams, established a perimeter around the home and attempted to make contact with the suspect.

Police said gas was deployed in the home in an attempt to drive the suspect out, but he refused to come out. Gas was deployed again.

After gas was deployed the second time, a fire started in the bedroom where the suspect was allegedly hiding.

Crews were able to control the fire, and police said they took the suspect into custody, but did not provide details as to when and how.

Officers said a search of the home was made using robots and found evidence of an assault that happened inside the house.

The case is being investigated as an attempted murder and arson.

Neighbor Thera Uzzell said she's never seen anything like this situation before, noting that it is usually a peaceful neighborhood. She said police evacuated her out of her home and when she looked out the windows of the truck she was in, she said she saw about 20 police cars and four SWAT trucks.

Uzzell added that the suspect is the woman's friend who cuts her grass.

"Seemed to be a real nice gentleman," Uzzell said. "I spoke with him not two days ago. They were on the back porch grilling and cooking out. He seemed to be a real nice guy, easy going, kind of laidback."

Wayne STEM Academy said that the school was on a soft lockdown due to law enforcement activity. The school is about six minutes away from Cuyler Best Road.
