President Donald Trump’s approval rating among Hispanics has surged to an over two-month high, a new poll from The Economist and YouGov shows on Tuesday.
Why It Matters
Hispanic voters are a sizable electorate whose preferences can swing close races involving Trump-backed candidates. Previous polling during Trump’s second term showed Hispanic support of Trump waning amid his administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement agenda and mixed economic signals.
Though Hispanic voters have historically leaned Democratic, they played a pivotal role in Trump’s 2024 win.
Trump has also landed record or near‑record lows among other key voting blocs, including Gen Z and Independent voters, potentially compounding headwinds for the White House and GOP amid public concern over the cost of living and the war with Iran.
What To Know
According to the new poll, Trump’s overall approval rating is 36 percent versus a 58 percent disapproval rating. Among Hispanics, Trump’s approval rating is 40 percent versus 52 percent disapproval.
The poll surveyed 1,573 U.S. adults from May 1 to May 4 and has a margin of error of 3.4 percent.
The last time Trump’s approval rating among Hispanics hit 40 percent with the pollster was in a survey from February 27 to March 2. His disapproval rating in that poll was 57 percent.
In an email to Newsweek via email on Tuesday, White House Spokeswoman Allison Schuster said, “President Trump was honored to receive a record level of support from Hispanic Americans that helped fuel his landslide 2024 election victory, and he’s spent every day since his inauguration working to make life better for them, and all Americans.
“From passing the largest middle-class tax cuts in American history, including No Tax on Tips, Overtime, and Social Security, to defeating Biden’s inflation crisis, hardworking Hispanic Americans are beginning to have some breathing room after four years of economic pain under the Democrats. There’s much more work to do, which is why President Trump and Republicans in Congress will continue fighting to make everyday life more affordable for working families.”
The poll from The Economist and YouGov also shows that only 28 percent of respondents feel the country is generally headed in the right direction. Sixty-one percent believe the U.S. is on the wrong track.
Trump’s approval rating on other policy issues including the Iran war, taxes, inflation and jobs are all underwater, the poll shows.
