Mariska Hargitay is opening up about the emotional reaction she had after learning Christopher Meloni’s “Law & Order: Organized Crime” had come to an end.
The longtime “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star said she was moved to tears after watching Meloni, 65, address fans following news that “Organized Crime” would not return for a sixth season.
“I saw it and burst out in tears, first of all,” Hargitay, 62, said in an interview with Extra on Wednesday, April 22. “I immediately burst out in tears because it has, just like he said, and he was so beautiful and open — because it has been a great ride.”
She continued, “And it has been so beautiful and intimate and such a huge part of his life and was life-changing for him.”
Meloni reprised his iconic Elliot Stabler role in 2021 when “Organized Crime” launched, bringing the fan-favorite detective back to television after years away from the franchise. Over five seasons, the show followed Stabler as he returned to New York to rebuild his life after personal tragedy.
Hargitay admitted the cancellation still caught her off guard. “It kind of took me by surprise because I knew and Chris is working and in demand and such a magnificent actor. But it’s, in a way, closing a chapter,” she said. “So when that happens, one needs to take inventory. It’s a real marker in your life.”
Even with the spinoff ending, Hargitay gave fans hope that Stabler and Olivia Benson may still reunite on screen. “Somehow, some way, yes,” she said when asked if their characters would cross paths again.
