The Colorado Avalanche took down the Minnesota Wild in Game 1, which featured a ton of scoring. Both teams exploded offensively during the first period, and they didn’t stop there. Jared Bednar’s Avalanche came away with a massive 9-6 Game 1 victory.
There aren’t many games that get that high scoring in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In fact, this was only the 10th game in playoff history with 15+ goals, according to the TNT broadcast. After the game, Bednar was asked to explain what happened in that contest. He admitted that he didn’t quite have the words for it.
“I can not. If you scripted that one, I don’t know how you do. I can’t explain it,” the Avalanche head coach said, via The Athletic’s Joe Smith.
The Avalanche got the scoring started, and the goals came in a flurry. Colorado raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, with all three goals coming within a span of three minutes. However, Colorado allowed goals at their end, too. By the end of the first period, the Wild cut the lead to one.
Colorado gave itself a two-goal cushion in the second period. But the Wild not only tied the game, they briefly took the lead. Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain the lead. Once the Avalanche took the lead again in the third period, they did not relinquish it again.
The Avalanche are certainly riding high from this performance. Colorado remains undefeated, and they hope to build upon this effort moving forward. These teams are back in action on Tuesday night for Game 2 at Ball Arena in Denver.
