One thing that is permanently, forever true is that gay guys, including Mike White, are obsessed with Laura Dern. There’s even a song about it. The actress will star in the upcoming fourth season of The White Lotus, per Variety. She’s replacing Helena Bonham Carter, who was originally cast on the season but left production on April 24 after filming had already begun. “With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” an HBO spokesperson told Vulture. “The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten, and will be recast in the coming weeks.”
,Technically, Dern has appeared on The White Lotus before. In season two, she played Dominic Di Grasso’s (Michael Imperioli) angry wife, but only through a phone call. She could be playing the same woman, or she could be an entirely different character. White and Dern previously worked together on the beloved HBO series Enlightened, which Dern starred in as Amy Jellicoe. Now, the two former collaborators will be working together on a character that is being rewritten for Dern on the fly, as shooting continues. The upcoming season is filming in France and will be set during the Cannes Film Festival. Could Dern be playing a high-powered Hollywood person traveling through Europe? Jay Kelly’s impact is, it turns out, immeasurable.
